Perched on the corner of Business 83 and Victoria Road , Nohemi Castillo has seen her share of accidents.
"It happens all the time," she tell us. "If they're not passing a red light, they're passing a stop sign."
The most recent accident involved an on duty police officer, who totaled his cruiser, while trying to make a stop.
"The officer was sitting outside my window for about 10-15 minutes before taking off behind someone," she says.
Donna police confirm Officer Jonathon Scaggs was pursuing a suspect, who he believed wasn't wearing a seatbelt.
"In this case, he was going to make a traffic stop and he didn't. Nothing was accomplished here," says Sergeant Alejandro Martinez.
Martinez says the officer ran a yellow light and was struck on the side by another vehicle. The accident sent three people to the hospital with minor injuries.
|But, the result could have been worse.
This intersection has a history of accidents, including a fatality that happened just a month ago. This time police say the main culprit was a bad light, and they've already taken action to fix it.
Police showed us picture of the malfunctioning traffic light that confirm the driver's account he never saw red.
"The red light was not working. TxDOT was contacted last night, and the problem was fixed."
In this case, no one will be ticketed for the accident, but police are warning drivers, even those carrying a badge, to always keep your eye out... because safety comes first.
"In this line of work, you've got to drive defensively," says Martinez . "And you've got to be aware of your surroundings. Lights and sirens do not stop vehicles."
